Steps for Applying a Large Decal with Soapy Water:
-
Clean the Surface:
- As with smaller decals, clean the surface thoroughly using rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner to remove dirt, grease, and debris.
- Ensure it is dry before proceeding.
-
Prepare the Soapy Water:
- Fill a spray bottle with water and add 2–3 drops of dish soap. Shake gently to mix.
-
Position the Decal:
- Place the decal on the surface (with backing paper still attached) to determine its placement.
- Use masking tape to create a hinge by securing one edge of the decal to the surface. This helps keep it aligned during application.
-
Spray the Surface with Soapy Water:
- Spray the soapy water generously on the surface where the decal will be applied. This allows you to reposition the decal if needed.
-
Peel the Backing Paper:
- Carefully peel away the backing paper, ensuring the decal stays attached to the transparent transfer tape.
-
Place the Decal:
- Lay the decal onto the wet surface, starting at the hinged edge. The soapy water lets you slide and adjust the decal into the perfect position.
-
Smooth the Decal:
- Use a squeegee or credit card to firmly press the decal onto the surface. Start at the center and work outward to push out excess water and air bubbles.
- Reapply soapy water to the outside of the transfer tape to help the squeegee glide smoothly.
-
Allow to Dry:
- Let the decal sit for 10–30 minutes to allow the water to evaporate, ensuring the adhesive bonds to the surface.
-
Remove the Transfer Tape:
- Slowly peel off the transfer tape at a 45-degree angle. If the decal lifts, press it back down and wait a little longer.
-
Final Adjustments:
- Use the squeegee to remove any remaining air bubbles or water pockets. For stubborn bubbles, gently pop them with a pin and smooth out the area.
Using soapy water makes handling large decals much easier and ensures a smooth, bubble-free finish!
